Wireman Convicted of Impersonation and Illegal Electrical Installation

The Standards, Utility and Wildlife Court (Electricity Court), on 5th April 2018, convicted a one Kimbugwe Yassin for carrying out electrical installation without a valid permit issued by Electricity Regulatory Authority, contrary to Section 88 (1) and (2) of the Electricity Act, 1999.

The conviction of Kimbugwe preceded a case reported to ERA in 2016, accusing Kimbugwe Yassin of forging his Electrical Installation Permit and moving on to carry out illegal electrical installations.

ERA carried out an investigation with the help of police officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate which revealed thatKimbugwe Yassinhad carried out electrical installation at the premises of a one Namutebi Aisha a resident of Namugongo.

Kimbugwe Yassin was arrested on 29th March 2018 and presented before Grade One Magistrate; Gladys Kamasanyu of the Standards, Utilities and Wildlife Court on Buganda Road. He pleaded guilty and was convicted to 6 months imprisonment.

ERA has often urged all wiremen carrying out electrical installations to apply for permits to enable them do their work legally and professionally to avoid electrical accidents caused by poor wiring, done by unprofessional and uncertified wiremen.

ERA organizes workshops training and interviews for wiremen in different regions of the country, the most recent one having been held in Gulu town from 27th to 29th March 2018.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority recently launched a partnership with the Uganda Police to investigate and apprehend all uncertified electricity wiremen. ERA urges all wiremen to have a valid electrical installation permits.
